Volunteer Management Trainer Certification Program

About The Volunteer Management Trainer Certification Program

The Volunteer Management Trainer Certification Program (VMTCP) offers an opportunity for advanced volunteer managers in Oregon to become recognized Volunteer Management Trainers and be a part of the team delivering VMT 101 modules throughout the state. It entails receiving specialized training and being available and willing to provide training based on the Betty Stallings curriculum. The Certification Policy for the VMT program, was developed by volunteer management professionals from around the state, serving on the Oregon State Committee on Volunteerism.

Why consider becoming a trainer?

It makes sense to become a trainer if you desire to help cultivate better volunteer management practices in Oregon, if you want to pass on your skills and experience, and further your professional development.
To become a VMT trainer, you must first attend a Train-the-Trainer session, hosted by Oregon Volunteers. Upon completion of the training session, you will have received a copy of the curriculum, further knowledge of the fundamentals of training and enrollment in the VMT trainer listserv. Once equipped of this information, you are on your way to becoming a certified trainer.

What does it mean to be a Certified trainer?

Oregon Volunteers asks that attendees of the Train-the-Trainer sessions commit to becoming a Certified trainer. The mission of this program is to make volunteer management training accessible, and support volunteerism around the state. When you attend the Train-the-Trainer session, you are agreeing to go forth and train individuals on the curriculum, whether within or outside of your own organization. You are connected to requests for training outside your organization through notices posted to the Trainer Listserv. Once you have met the criteria below, you become a Certified trainer.

Volunteer Management Trainer Certification

In order to receive certification, you must deliver and report on (7) training modules within the following timeframe:

Attended a Train-the-Trainer session between January 1 - July 31 in any year:
Deadline is December 31 of the following calendar year, i.e. June 2011 - December 2012.

Attended a Train-the-Trainer session between August 1 through December 31 in any year:
Deadline is December 31 of the second following calendar year, i.e. November 2011 - December 2013.

Volunteer Management Trainer Re-Certification

Some trainers may be unable to meet certification, or may choose to opt-out, unable to meet the Certification requirements. In this event, Oregon Volunteers, per our licensing agreement of the curriculum, will ask that the curriculum be returned. However, we hope that you do choose to participate in this exciting opportunity to make training accessible, and in the event you remain within the program, you also have the opportunity to continue your certification, beyond the initial period, through our Re-Certification policy.

To continue certification, past the initial Certification period, trainers must achieve a total of 15 Personal Development Units(PDU) in order to maintain their certification. All trainers must submit a recertification application for review by a panel of their peers.

PDU Activities:

  • Each presentation hour of the approved 101 curriculum (3 PDUs - 6 units required)
  • Each presentation hour of other VM material (2 PDUs)
  • Each presentation hour on other topics (1 PDU - 5 units maximum)
  • Retaking the Train the Trainer workshop (5 PDUs)
  • Each hour of attendance in VM workshops (1 PDU)
  • Each hour of college credit in VM or CVA course (3 PDUs)
  • 500 words-or-less Personal Philosophy Statement about being a VM trainer (2 PDUs)

Expired Certification
