Volunteer Management Training
“If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the women and men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea”.-Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Wisdom of the Sands
About the Volunteer Management Training(VMT) program
Across Oregon, volunteer managers play a crucial role in shaping the effectiveness, efficiency, and capacity of organizations in meeting diverse goals. The volunteer manager relies on unique and highly developed skills and tools in government agencies, private industry, and mission driven/non-profit organizations. However, many volunteer managers are not given the training and tools necessary to improve their effectiveness and results. This is where Oregon Volunteers’ Volunteer Management Training program can help.
Oregon Volunteers, in an effort to support volunteerism throughout the state, offers two distinct services through the Volunteer Management Training program. Organizations, who would like their staff to receive volunteer training, can request training sessions to be delivered to their staff. Oregon Volunteers will match a VMT program trainer to their needs. Volunteer managers who would like to become a trainer with the VMT program, can attend the VMT program's Train-the-Trainer event, and become certified as a VMT Certified Trainer, under our certification program.
We have over 30 highly-skilled trainers that can deliver VM training to organizations throughout the state. This training is provided on a not-for-profit model and divided into 12 modules (each is roughly an hour in length). An organization can request any module in the series, mix and match modules, or even arrange for training in all 12 over an extended period of time. Also, each training session can be adjusted to meet the organization’s needs.
Receiving volunteer management training can improve volunteer recruitment and supervision efforts, provide tools to more effectively place volunteers within organizations, help organizations better leverage volunteer capacity, address problems, and provide more rewarding experiences for volunteers. In turn the organization, the volunteers, and the clients ultimately served can all gain from the training.
