AmeriCorps members tell us why they serve

by Jared Paben

Hundreds of AmeriCorps members are serving in communities throughout Oregon at this moment.

Why?

Each person has a different reason. We asked members to share some of their reasons with us by providing video testimonials, called the ‘I Serve Oregon Because … ‘ project. The response was amazing!

“I decided to serve because I enjoy helping people and showing a genuine interest in them,” said Katie Craven, an AmeriCorps member serving through United Communities AmeriCorps in Roseburg. She is based at the Boys and Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley. “I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed and with that comes the fact that every child deserves a safe place with people there to support them.”

“I serve because of the impact it’s going to have on my future and the future of my family. I also serve because of the way my worldviews change in this program,” said Colby Camirand, who is serving in Bend through the Heart of Oregon AmeriCorps program. “(This program) gives you the edge that you need to get those world views that are actually going to help you and give you a well-rounded perspective on life, and that’s really important.”

Many thanks to all the programs and members who contributed to this project!
