The Salem-based Statesman Journal newspaper reported that Salem ranks 7th in the country in volunteerism, compared to other mid-sized cities.

Reporter Stefanie Knowlton interviewed our own Kathleen Joy, executive director of Oregon Volunteers.

One of the newspaper website commenters, Kevin Rash, wrote in response to the article: "This is why we like living here in Salem. :-) When we collectively pitch in, we can do anything."

The article was based on the Volunteering and Civic Life in America report, which was released on Monday, Dec. 16.
